Sport fishing Singles league. “Newcomer Clayton Camilleri from M’Scala,
takes first place”. After having to change fishing venues from Biegi point to Kalkara creek due to tuna pens and trawlers berthed at Biegi point, the KSFA 5th singles match settled down into an excellent match. The whistle blew at 6.30am to set the match off where all 20 anglers immediately started to feed balls of ground bait to attract the mystical mullet. The 5 anglers who are the league leaders, were all sectioned together, and the competitiveness was tremendous, all fishing their hearts out. The main target at dawn is specifically to fish far out into the middle of the creek to pick up some good-sized bream and horse mackerel. However never forgetting to periodically feed the ground bait balls of finely ground bread and cheese in their swims to keep the mullet interested. Before the match, discussions were focused on the good sessions of mullet fishing held over the week, this due to the first rains, which oxygenizes the sea water and increases the metabolism of mullet especially, together with the north east wind which prevailed for many days. 3 hours into the match and a good picture of those who were leading the event started to evolve with Clayton Camilleri from M’Scala catching a number of bream and wrasses. Close neck to neck was Steve Johnston who was having a good match catching horse mackerel and red bream, from the middle of the bay. All anglers were very close but the latter two anglers seemed to be in that days best positions. Other anglers opted to start fishing the last couple of hours for mullet to try pick up on their weights, but sadly the fish they all expected to catch never turned up in numbers, with only Clayton from Kirkop, Robert Bugeja and Jonathon Vassallo landing a good sized mullet each. The end results have again fully opened the league with points very close together, making the singles league that more exciting, with two matches left to the end of the season.
