Sport Angling News:
Camilleri
and Marlow, ”Speed Fish” to victory in the Kingfisher Doubles
4th match. : Sliema water front
Sunday
25th May, Mario Marlow and Clayton Camilleri known as
team Sharks, won the Kingfisher shore doubles 4th match
held along Sliema front. It was not an easy match to fish with
crystal clear waters, making the anglers use ultra light lines of
minimum breaking strains to catch fish. The smaller fish were the
target with the match winners catching over 3.77 kilograms of Damsel
fish (Cawl) that is approximately 300 of them. These fish are caught
using a fishing technique called “Speed Fishing” were 1 to 2
meter rods are set up with fine lines and tiny size 28 hooks, using
prawn meat as bait. It’s quite an art, anglers have to be totally
focused and quick, it is something to be seen. Many a tourist
stopped to watch the anglers produce some excellent fishing.
Fishing the middle of the harbor was slow, although some
anglers waited patiently for that bonus fish. Some anglers
eventually opted to start speed fishing for damsel fish and vogue (vopi)
but it was too late, for team Sharks were way in the lead. Other
species of fish caught on the day were wrasse, gilthead bream,
gurnards and red mullet.
A total of 20 teams fish the Kingfisher doubles, league which
proves to be the most popular with the members. The results at the
end of the day were as follows:
