Kingfisher Sports Fishing Association “Singles league 2008” Match 2.

An early start it was, for the twenty Kingfisher members fishing the second singles league match last Sunday 6th of April. Pitch black darkness, at 5.00am along the pier at Kalkara creek, but this would not deter the anglers from shying away from the passion they have for shore angling. The enthusiasm and competitiveness amongst the anglers can be truly felt and this is what makes match anglers come fish these organized matches. The day started with the usual draw of sections and pegs, all anglers waiting eagerly to draw a good peg, the end pegs always preferred from the rest. The main discussion between the anglers was the strong wind pushing from the North West, coming parallel to the side of the creek, this would prove hard fishing. After a while all anglers settled into their pegs setting up their rods, keep nets and bait waiting for the blow of the chief marshal’s whistle to start the match at 6.00am. Many anglers opted for short rods and fished the sides of the jetty, catching small fish, which in quantities can also prove gains to win sections and sometimes the competition. Others opted to fish for mullet right from the start, knowing that Kalkara is a good mullet venue. This is a gamble however, for if the mythical mullet does not show, much time is wasted. Anglers fishing further down the inside of the creek where slightly more sheltered from the wind, which allowed them to fish further out into the middle using heavy weights. This is no easy task, for the bay is full of mooring buoys and anglers require accurate casting to find a path between these, especially when reeling in a decent fish.

It was evident that it was going to be a difficult day, so anglers would have to fish hard with light tackle to gain some points. A variety of small fish where caught like wrasse, bream and a couple of mullet. Five hours flew past and it was then time to weigh, all fish held alive in special keep nets to be released into the sea after they are weighed at each peg. The morning ended with four anglers stepping onto the podium.
