Mario Marlow,”Speed Fishes” to victory in the Kingfisher Singles 3rd league match.

Saturday 7th June, Mario Marlow, won the Kingfisher shore angling singles 3rd match held along Senglea front. It was not an easy match to fish with crystal clear waters, making the anglers use ultra light lines of minimum breaking strains to catch fish. The smaller fish were the target with the match winner catching over 1.69 kilograms of bogue fish (vopi). These fish are caught using a fishing technique called “Speed Fishing” were 1 to 2 meter rods are set up with fine lines and tiny size 28 hooks, using prawn meat as bait. It’s quite an art, anglers have to be totally focused and quick, it is something to be seen. Many a tourist stopped to watch the anglers produce some excellent fishing.  Fishing the middle of the harbor was slow, due to the strong northwesterly winds, which made it difficult to detect bites, although some anglers waited patiently for that bonus fish. Other anglers eventually opted to start speed fishing for damsel fish and vogue (vopi) but it was too late, for Mario was way in the lead. Other species of fish caught on the day were wrasse, gilthead bream, gurnards and red mullet.  A total of 20 anglers fish the Kingfisher singles league which proves most competitive with its members. The results at the end of the day were as follows:

1st             Mario Marlow    1690

        2nd             Joe Zammit    1500

      3rd          Clayton Camilleri     1410

All fish were returned back into the sea to be caught another day, honoring the Kingfisher motto which is,

 “Catch and Release”.

The winning members were all presented with trophies and vouchers thankfully sponsored by
