Why do we do Sport-Fishing?   By  Chris Mizzi

It is not easy to explain why we gather on a Sunday at 5:00am in the bitterly cold winds of winter, we draw the Pegs and start fishing at 6:00am.  At least this is what my wife asks me every time that I would wake up at 3:30am, bumping into at least 3 bedroom furniture piece before successfully exiting the room! And as if all of this would not impair on our “ state of mind”, after 5 hours struggling to catch some fish, what do we do?  We release it all back! Well you see doctor, I’m normal! At this point nothing seems to be in favor of the sport-fisherman, but wait, and hold your horses for a while. Does it make sense to train all the week and only to play for 1 and half hours trying to shot the ball between the poles of your opponent, and being chased by eleven players in the process, and you could end up with some broken bones too….  So what is it that makes people follow a particular sport? Personally I can see 2 major categories, the first one being competition which is an inner instinct to prove that you can do better than all the others, for many it is their job ‘cause they’re professionals. The latter need to feel this competition drive to win in order to guarantee their jobs. In the second category I would fit those who enjoy the company of a bunch of friend that would greet and joke with each other despite of the awkward weather conditions. Those who truly express their congratulations to the winners, and were winning is a great satisfaction, but the greatest satisfaction is, that, you know that a Sunday morning can be spent with a bunch of descent fellows just happy to have the passion for fishing. Thanks to the Kingfisher Sport-Fishing Club, I have found the passion in the sport and learned to respect the marine fauna and flora. Thanks to the KSFA, I learned to appreciate the “Catch and release” philosophy. I have learned to support and protect the well being of the fish around us. Thanks Mates!

I could not end this article without mentioning 3 of my friends, namely David Tabone for introducing me to the club, Alfred Cassar, and my team mate Adrian Nelson, thanks guys and very much!!
