B’Bugia is considered by Kingfisher match
anglers a difficult venue to fish, due to the lack of fish available to
catch in this bay. It all boils down to the amount of gill nets dropped
into this coastal area, without any control whatsoever by the authorities
concerned. For those who do not know what Gill nets are, they are long
nets having a very small mesh, dropped into the sea by commercial and
amateur fisherman. The mesh to these nets is so small that all fish big or
small are caught from the gills, with the little fish killed and
disregarded many a time.
Match was set for Sunday 7th May at
5.00am, with a total of 30 anglers participating in this years singles
league. On arrival it was evident that we would need to fish hard to
obtain a considerable weight. This due to the fact that all the coastal
shore had gillnets dropped some 100 meters off shore.
The horn to start the match blew at 6.00 am,
and the splashes of ground bait balls could be heard all around as we
baited our areas to try attract whatever fish was available in the area.
An hour later and the news started to spread that over Pretty bay area the
mullet had shown up, with Adrian Nelson and Freddy Cassar landing the
first few decent fish. Not long after a beautiful 1 kilo Awrata caught and
landed by Darren Vella off the sandy bottom using a technique known to
anglers as running ledger, this fish now registering to be the biggest
fish of the season. As time passed those fishing San Gorg to Gorbachov
monument area found it very difficult to catch good weights, with less
than a kilo registered by any member, in this area. Here, the benefit of
the point system, were those registering low weights can still obtain a
number of points, for the section would have had all anglers registering
low weights. The point system keeps the league interesting till the last
match held in December, many a time with only a point or two difference
between the first three leading anglers.
Fish caught on the day-included mullet, bouge (vopi),
horse mackerel (sawrell) and a number of bream and wrasse. The winners to
this event were Adrian Nelson with 2.1kg, Jonathon Cassar 1.31kg and
Darren Vella 1.16kg. The section winners to this event were Freddy Cassar,
Neville Vassallo, John Attard, Stefan Borg and Clayton Camilleri. All
winners were presented with trophies and vouchers sponsored by Mister
Fish.
All live fish were released back to their
habitat, and the dead fish given to an orphanage to be consumed.
