How long have you been a paid up member with KSFA?
As founder of the KSFA from day one. KSFA was born after I had been
organizing matches, around two years later. I remember the first
competition held in M’Scala Zonqor point. A total of 18 anglers fished
that match I was really surprised with the outcome. From that day on it
just took off and the phone went crazy. I remember a time when we had
60 anglers all round L-Isla front, that was competition. The KSFA came
about when I suddenly realised that to much work was involved and so help
was needed drastically, that is when we formed the first committee. From that point forward we where
the pioneers of sport fishing on our Island.

Any Personal Records? Biggest fish caught?

My personal best shore fishing is a 2.2kg bass caught on 0.10mm line, I had won a European light tackle award from UK. My biggest fish caught boat is a 12kg alunga caught with Freddie Cassar, what a fight that put up, almost took me for a swim a couple of times. My mullet records are 2.4 kg the biggest thick lip caught at Msida creek. I also caught a nice Awrata 2.5 KG back in 1991, using 0.14mm line and a live shrimp as bait, at M’scala that was night fishing.

How do you prepare yourself prior to an event/ competition? Bait, rigs?

Like all match anglers I begin about a week before, making rigs, especially paternoster. As for float set ups I prefer to rig up on the day as it puts me in the spirit of the match and gives me the opportunity to check the sea conditions before tackling up. My number one bait is Farka by far. I have caught all kinds of fish on this bait and most have been good sized.

Your favorite competition location? Why?

I prefer shallow water not deeper than 4 to 5 meters as this gives me the edge to fish for my favorite fish THE MULLET. So I would say Gzira, Sliema and Birgu.

Your favorite “fun fishing” location?

Fun fishing location is Msida and Marsa ras hanzir in the shallow part.

Your favorite fish? Why?
I could go on forever THE MULLET of course, I still think that kilo for kilo this
is one of the best fighting fish in our seas. Also still abundant if you know where
to look for them, they require light tackle and excellent feeding methods, not to
shy them off.

Your favorite fishing method?

The fixed loaded waggler method is always my first choice, as this method has the ability to present the bait in a natural way and flows with the current.

Favorite fishing equipment? Rods, hooks, monofilament, floats etc….?

A 5 meter Trabucco soft rod ordered specially for the job from Italy and a Shimano match reel.  Hooks I like 18, 14 and 12 mostly rarely do I go above these. Line my favorite is Maxima ultra green diameters 0.08 mm and 0.10 mm. Floats I adore and have a collection, but most of all I would go for a Trabucco loaded 8gram waggler, I think that the specs written on the side of the float, that is the weight needed to rig up with, is always spot on. Again depends on the conditions of the day.

Your occupation when not fishing?

I am Installations Supervisor for Melita cable Internet and Cable television

Other interests or hobbies?

I love reading Fishing magazines, and watching Lverpool FC play. Come on you reds !!!!

What are your thoughts on the future of sport fishing in Malta?

I think that the future is bright and that we will one day have a National team representing our country abroad and getting the results we always wanted. I am committed to see a team go represent Malta in matches.

Describe your favorite fish story?

Way back when I used to fish the other side of the Island, that is Mtahleb area, this particular night my father and I had 4 rods cast out with a Vopa as bait. Like many nights it was quiet until one of my fathers rods went crazy, it bent double. The reels where like winches and he could hardly turn the handle, I was getting so excited that I could not wait any longer, so I crept on my belly to the edge of the cliff with a torch and shone down to see what fish was coming up. Suddenly I shouted it’s a Gawwija, and my father being English said what kind of fish is a Gawwija ( seagull). It was massive and took half my hand away trying to unravel the line to let it go.
